Single account and user management: you can't have one without the other! Article

Although it may seem secondary, user management is actually at the heart of a marketplace's responsibilities. Just as account creation is central to the online shopping experience. Whether you look at it from a buyer's or marketplace's perspective, securing these interactions is of paramount importance, as threats to data security can turn these processes into sources of friction.

In their quest to secure transactions between individuals, second-hand marketplaces are also striving to offer great serenity in access to their sales platforms. This approach is part of a context where, since the arrival of the first marketplaces a little over 20 years ago, security practices and needs, both for transactions between individuals and for user management, have significantly evolved, highlighting the urgent need for these platforms to adapt to new uses.

The exponential growth of platforms: starting point for user management awareness

Initially, the market was made up of just one or two reference sites for the different consumption groups, for broad consumer categories there was Leboncoin and for more specialised ones, Videdressing existed for clothing and accessories. And there was no problem registering on them to cover most of your needs.

Then, the technology became more democratized and the players became specialized, causing the number of platforms to explode. Without paying attention to it, users kept their profiles, they created new ones with new entrants. By "silent stacking", they found themselves present on one or even several dozen marketplaces...

How can we protect personal data, when we are subject to specific rules of user management, confidentiality, hosting and storage that we are less and less able to know. Besides, who could?

Beyond the hypermnesia required to remember all their passwords, users are exposed to many risks. And if they had to observe the CNIL's recommendation to change it every month, imagine what it would mean for them on the scale of a year!

Streamlining your online presence: a necessity rather than a need

No one is asking users to delete their profiles, on sites they would like to be able to continue to visit from time to time. If only they had one account for all platforms, it would make their lives easier and reduce their exposure to cyber fraud risks.

In the meantime, there's enough to lose your Latin. Because even if more and more marketplaces offer secure payment between individuals, they do not all offer an equivalent level of security regarding the management of users, personal data or purchases. We no longer know where our commercial and banking data is stored, knowing in addition that each platform does not have the same features, payment methods, security and return policy...

In this fog and with all that we hear about digital crime, it is difficult to remain calm. When it comes to data storage alone, it's chilling:

  • Personal data: civil status data can circulate, be lost, be sold in files that will then feed marketing campaigns and uncontrolled canvassing that we do not suspect. And we're not even talking about the risks of identity theft...
  • Banking data: this is an even more sensitive area, because if the faulty or inefficient platform is hacked, it too can end up for sale on the dark web. Did you know that in the darkest layers of the internet, there are hackers who have fraudulently recovered the contact details of hundreds or even thousands of users and who sell these off in whole batches?

Disparate safety practices that call for caution ...

Not all platforms have the same security policy, nor the same requirement in user management. It's like in philosophy or theatre: on the one hand, you have the most "modern" people who work at the cutting edge, and on the other hand, the "classics" who haven't seen fit to evolve...

On a more serious note:

  • Some marketplaces pride themselves on offering real security in exchanges;
  • Others integrate simple payment systems, but without offering the benefit of an escrow service or without applying a KYC procedure;
  • Still others offer things on paper... but in an unfinished way. For example, when making purchases, they indicate that they are blocking funds. But in reality, they will release the payment upon receipt without giving you the buyer time to check the conformity of the products. Receiving something is already that... But what exactly to receive?
  • Finally, the rest do not handle payment at all, and kindly invite their users to deal with their buyers...

A real integrated trusted third party changes your life in the long term !

We can all agree that rather than sticking our heads in the sand or just chancing it, it is better to rely on a single player offering a genuine security policy. This way, users can continue to buy with peace of mind, without having to unsubscribe from certain marketplaces.

It is therefore reassuring to use an advanced system, a one-stop shop that favours strong customer authentication and is integrated into the various platforms they frequent. The single account ensures a "portability of trust" granted to its operator. So, regardless of where you buy, you know you can benefit from it without asking any questions!

And that's the whole point of the role that Tripartie.

  • Fluidity: users no longer need to remember their various identifiers and contact details, which would otherwise have varied according to each platform (and the recos of our dear CNIL).
